Spatial heterogeneity and temporal variability in the incidence of sugar beet diseases

Leaf pathogens cause economically important fungal diseases in sugar beet production. By utilizing hyperspectral imaging techniques and infrared thermography, the spatial and temporal distribution of the leaf pathogens Cercospora beticola (Sacc), Erysiphe betae (Vanha) Weltzien, Ramularia beticola Fautrey u. Lambotte and Uromyces betae (Persoon) Léveillé will be assessed. The typical spectral signature of each disease will be investigated on leaf, plant and canopy level in greenhouse experiments and in the field. The sensitivity of these non invasive methods will be investigated. In addition to the hyperspectral techniques the disease development will be analysed by using microscopic techniques like fluorescence, laser and electron microscopy. The quantification of disease intensity with optical sensors will be compared to microbiological techniques such as real time PCR.
The aim of the Project is to describe the plant pathogene interaction in detail to transfer knowledge from the lab to the field level. In cooperation with other projects the incidence and dynamics of diseases will be correlated to the spatial distribution of inoculum sources as well as to heterogeneity in soil properties and microclimate within the crop canopy. At present only few information is available about spatial and temporal characteristics of leaf diseases for a site specific fungicide application in sugar beets. With data from this project and existing knowledge about their epidemiology the spatial distribution of major sugar beet diseases will be visualized in GIS layers and a temporally adapted and spatially defined sensor based fungicide application might be feasible.
