Site-specific weed control - dynamics of weed populations in arable fields using GIS and expert systems

Weed seedling populations have been found spatially and temporally heterogeneous within agricultural fields. They often occur in aggregated patches of varying size or in stripes along the direction of cultivation. The variation in weed seedling populations has so far been ignored for weed management decisions since techniques to assess the weed seedling distribution in acceptable time were not available. Nevertheless, most agree that a great potential for herbicide savings exists, when weed control methods are applied site-specifically. The spatial and temporal dynamics of weed populations are not well understood. If weed populations are stable from year to year, it would be possible to use last year's weed map to adjust for next year's weed management decisions. The dynamics of weed populations is influenced by farming practices, soil parameters and weather conditions. Still, only a few results are available to quantify those effects. An understanding of fundamental weed population biology would improve our ability to develop site-specific management decisions. One objective is to develop an expert system that allows to forcast the spatial and temporal dynamics of weed populations in arable fields. A second objective is to develop valid decision algorithms for patch spraying.
